COB vs SMD LED Strip Lights: Key Technical Differences
LED Packaging and Density
The distinguishing factor of COB and SMD is that the LEDs are packaged. It is a Chip-on-Board where multiple LED chips are packed together onto a substrate or PCB. This allows high density, hence increasing the number of LED chips per unit area, with improved luminous flux and intensity.
On the contrary, SMD (Surface Mounted Device) LEDs are individually packaged and mounted in space on the PCB. A discrete SMD LED has an anode, cathode, and some even have ESD protection diodes and a current limiting resistor integrated into the small package. Some of the most common packages used in strip lights include 3528, 2835, 5050, and 5730 and numbers are the dimensions in millimeters.
Aspect | COB LED Strip | SMB LED Strip |
LED Packaging | Multiple LED chips closely packed on a substrate or PCB | Individual LED packages spaced apart on the PCB |
LED Density | Higher, more LED chips per unit area | Higher, more LED chips per unit area |
Heat Generation | Higher, due to concentrated LED arrangement | Higher, due to concentrated LED arrangement |
Light Output and Efficiency
Generally, COB LED strip lights are much brighter than SMD strips concerning the lumen output of one watt. The reason is that because of the closer packing of the LED chips, more light could be emitted per unit area. In general, the luminous efficacy of COB strips falls in the range of 80-120 lumens/watt, while in SMD strips, the luminous efficacy lies in the range of 50-80 lumens/watt.
However, it is only fair to say that the actual output and performance differ with the quality of the LED chip, driver circuitry, thermal management, and optical design. Even high-quality SMD strips with newer LED packages and efficient drivers provide great luminous efficacy, though not on a par with COB average.
Aspect | COB LED Strip | SMD LED Strip |
Luminous Efficacy | 80-120 lumens per watt | 50-80 lumens per watt |
Light Output | Higher, due to dense LED arrangement | Lower, due to spaced-out LED packages |
Efficiency Factors | Quality of LED chips, driver circuitry, thermal management, optical design | Quality of LED chips, driver circuitry, thermal management, optical design |
Beam Angle and Light Distribution
The other important difference between COB and SMD strips is related to the LED’s light-emitting angle. Normally, COB LEDs would have a wider beam angle, 120 degrees or more, because of their multi-chip design and application of a phosphor layer or diffuser over the chips. That means the light spread will be wider in the case of COB and ideal for applications where uniform illumination of a larger area is required.
SMD LEDs have a smaller beam angle of approximately 120 degrees or less. Because of this, the light from each individual LED package is focused into a more concentrated beam, thus creating a spotlight effect. Such characteristics make SMD strips appropriate for accent lighting, spotlighting, and where the light control is required precisely.
Aspect | COB LED Strip | SMD LED Strip |
Beam Angle | Wider, 120 degrees or more | Narrower, 120 degrees or less |
Light Distribution | Smoother, more homogeneous, no visible hot spots or shadows | More “dotted” appearance, especially when viewed up close |
Application Suitability | Uniform illumination over larger areas | Accent lighting, spotlighting, precise light control |
Color Rendering and Consistency
Another important consideration is color rendition, which is the degree to which the color of an object illuminated by a given light source appears as it would under natural outdoor daylight. Generally speaking, COB LED strips have a higher Color Rendering Index than SMD strips. Due to the multichip design and phosphor coating, COB LEDs can mix colors much better and provide a more balanced spectrum, hence giving improved color fidelity.
SMD LED strips are also capable of providing good color rendition, especially when high-quality LED chips with advanced phosphor formulations are used. Since the SMD LEDs are packaged individually, there may be slight variability of color consistency between the LEDs. This, in turn, may result in noticeable differences in color down the length of the strip, particularly on low-quality products.
Aspect | COB LED Strip | SMD LED Strip |
Color Rendering Index (CRI) | Higher, due to multi-chip design and phosphor coating | Lower, but can be improved with high-quality LED chips and phosphors |
Color Consistency | More easily maintained, due to LED chips from the same wafer and uniform phosphor coating | Slight variations possible between individual LED packages |
Color Mixing | Better, due to balanced spectrum and phosphor coating | Good, but may require careful LED binning for consistency |
Heat Generation and Management
It has already been explained that higher density in COB LED strips generates more heat than SMD. In such closely packed LED chips, heat is concentrated in a small area, which can raise the operating temperature of the strip. Proper heat dissipation is quite essential for maintaining performance and longevity in these COB strips.
The COB strips have to be effectively thermally managed, either by using aluminum PCBs or heat sinks with thermally conductive adhesives applied. Poor heat dissipation could lead to high temperatures that may cause degradation in luminous flux, color shift, and even pre-mature failure of LEDs.
With spaced-out LED packages, SMD LED strips intrinsically dissipate heat much better. Because more surface area and space are available to allow air to pass between packages, individual LEDs dissipate their heat more efficiently. In contrast, high-density SMD strips have a lot of LEDs and can generate significant heat that needs proper thermal management measures.
Aspect | COB LED Strip | SMD LED Strip |
Heat Generation | Higher, due to concentrated LED arrangement | Lower, due to spaced-out LED packages |
Thermal Management | Crucial, requires aluminum PCBs, heat sinks, or thermally conductive adhesives | Important for high-density strips, but inherently better heat dissipation |
Performance Impact | High temperatures can cause luminous flux degradation, color shift, and premature LED failure | Less prone to heat-related issues, but still requires proper thermal management |
Cost and Customization
SMD LED strips are normally much cheaper in terms of budget compared to COB striping. Due to the individual packaging of SMD LEDs, their standardized manufacturing processes further contribute to a lower cost when produced. This makes various configurations greatly possible and quite reasonably priced, especially in many situations.
With a higher component density and since it’s manufactured in a special way, COB LED strips come out a bit more costly. Probably, some of the explanations for the price difference are a custom-designed PCB, quality LED chips, and an advanced packaging technique used in COB manufacturing.
Other differences between the two technologies involve customization options. The flexibility of cutting and reconnecting multiple strips gives an advantage in using SMD LED strips. This strip can easily be cut on its designated cut points, and one can reconnect using solderless connectors or soldering. This affords more flexibility for installation and customization of an application as it suits the given application requirements.
Aspect | COB LED Strip | SMD LED Strip |
Cost | Higher, due to specialized manufacturing and higher component density | Lower, due to individual packaging and standardized manufacturing |
Customization | Limited cutting options, but customizable color temperature, CRI, and beam angle during manufacturing | More flexible, easily cut and reconnected for specific application requirements |
Availability | Less widely available, often require custom orders | Widely available in various configurations |
