KingOrnan Lighting Academy 4: Color Rendering Index

Welcome to our Kingornan Lighting Academy again. In the last issue, we explored the concept and usage scenarios of color temperature in depth. This issue will discuss the “color rendering index”.

The color rendering index is a very important optical concept that directly affects our perception of color. When choosing a light source, in addition to considering factors such as brightness and color temperature, the color rendering index is also an important indicator to pay attention to. Light sources with a high color rendering index can provide more realistic color reproduction, improve visual comfort, and improve the quality of life.

KingOrnan Lighting Academy 4: Color Rendering Index

What is the color rendering index?

The Color Rendering Index (CRI) is a technical indicator that quantifies the color rendering ability of a light source. It is expressed as CRI, which stands for Color Rendering Index. Color rendering, also known as color reproduction or color fidelity, is an essential quality of a light source.

Color Rendering Explained:

olor rendering refers to a light source’s ability to show the colors of various objects faithfully in comparison with a natural light source. It is assessed by comparing the appearance of colors under a reference or benchmark light source with the same color temperature. The spectral components emitted by a light source determine its color quality. Light sources with the same color can have different spectral compositions, and those with a broader spectral range generally provide better color rendering. When key wavelengths reflected by an object are missing or scarce in the light spectrum, significant color shifts occur. The greater the color difference, the poorer the color rendering of the light source for that specific color.

Types of Color Rendering:

  1. Faithful Color Rendering: This type focuses on accurately representing the original colors of the objects, as closely as possible to natural light. A high CRI value close to 100 indicates excellent color fidelity, which is particularly sought after in television lighting.
  2. Effect Color Rendering: Also known as special color rendering, this type emphasizes specific colors to enhance or modify the appearance for artistic or aesthetic purposes, often used to express the beauty of life.

Benchmark for Color Rendering:

Sunlight is considered the benchmark for excellent color rendering, assigned a CRI of 100 (note: this is not 100%!). The CRI is sometimes referred to as the comprehensive color rendering index or general color rendering index and is denoted by the symbol Ra.

Measurement of Color Rendering Index:

To accurately assess the CRI, the International Commission on Illumination developed a measurement method in 1948. This involves calculating the color rendering index of a light source using the color differences observed when eight standard color samples are illuminated by both a standard light source and the light source under test. The indices for these samples are noted as R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, and R8. The comprehensive color rendering index (Ra) is the average of these eight specific indices. A higher Ra value indicates better color rendering quality, while a lower value suggests poorer quality.

Calculation Method for the Color Rendering Index (Ra)

The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) established a method for calculating the Color Rendering Index (Ra) in 1948. This method involves evaluating the color rendering performance of a light source by comparing it to a reference light source with the same color temperature. The Ra value is derived from the color rendering indices (Ri) of eight standard colors.

Color Rendering Index Values for Standard Colors

Each Ri represents the color rendering index value for a specific standard color. The eight colors and their corresponding Ri values are as follows:

  • R1: Light grayish red
  • R2: Dark grayish yellow
  • R3: Strong yellowish green
  • R4: Moderate yellowish green
  • R5: Light bluish green
  • R6: Light blue
  • R7: Light violet
  • R8: Light reddish purple

  • Biological clock disruption: Low CRI light sources may interfere with the body’s biological clock, leading to problems such as decreased sleep quality and lack of concentration.
  • Psychological impact: Low CRI light sources can make people feel depressed and uncomfortable, affecting their mood.

How to choose a healthy light source?

  • Give priority to high CRI: Generally speaking, light sources with a CRI of 80 or above are more suitable for daily lighting.
  • Pay attention to color temperature: In addition to CRI, color temperature is also an important factor affecting lighting effects. Generally speaking, warm-toned light sources are more suitable for creating a warm and comfortable atmosphere, while cool-toned light sources are more suitable for work and study.
  • Avoid flicker: Flicker can irritate the eyes, so choose lamps without flicker.
  • Pay attention to glare: Excessive glare can cause damage to your eyes, so choose lamps with good glare control.

The color rendering index is closely related to our health. Choosing a light source with a high CRI not only allows us to see more realistic colors, but also improves our visual comfort, adjusts our biological clock, and improves our quality of life. When choosing lamps, we should comprehensively consider factors such as CRI, color temperature, strobe, glare, etc. to create a good lighting environment for our health.

How to simply test the color rendering index of light sources at home?

We can roughly judge the color rendering index of the light source through some simple methods:

Observe the color of the object :

  • Contrast method: Observe the same object under different light sources and compare whether its colors are natural and saturated.
  • Standard color cards: Use standard color cards, such as color temperature cards or color rendering index cards, to compare under different light sources.

Visual observation:

  • Skin color: Observe your skin color under different light sources to see if it is natural.
  • Food color: Observe the color of the food to see if it is bright and attractive.
  • Plant color: Observe the color of the plant’s leaves to see if they are emerald green.

Relationship between color rendering index and saturation

The color rendering index (CRI) measures the ability of a light source to reproduce the true color of an object, while saturation refers to the purity of the color. Although the two seem different, they are closely related.

Light sources with high CRI can better restore saturated colors: Light sources with high CRI can more accurately restore the original colors of objects, including highly saturated red, green, blue, etc. This makes objects look more vivid and lively under such light sources.

Light sources with low CRI will affect saturation: Light sources with low CRI will distort the color of objects and reduce saturation. For example, an apple that was originally bright red may appear dull under a light source with low CRI.

Why choose sunlight as the standard?

Show the color temperature changes of sunlight from 6 AM to 5 PM every hour.

Natural light: Sunlight is the most common light source in nature and serves as the benchmark for our color perception.

Spectral continuity: The spectrum of sunlight is very continuous, covering various wavelengths from ultraviolet to infrared, which can make objects appear rich and colorful.

Generally accepted: Using sunlight as the standard is the most widely accepted standard internationally.

Relationship between Color Rendering Index (CRI) and Sunlight

Standard reference light source: When measuring the color rendering index of a light source, sunlight is usually selected as the reference light source. This is because sunlight is considered to be the most ideal light source in nature, which can make objects present the most real and natural colors.

Comparison and scoring: By comparing the color of the light source under test with the color of the object under sunlight, the degree of color restoration of the object by the light source under test is evaluated. Then, based on the comparison result, a score is given to the light source under test, which is the color rendering index.

Value range: The color rendering index ranges from 0 to 100. The higher the value, the stronger the light source’s ability to restore the color of the object, and the closer it is to sunlight.

Color rendering index and energy saving

The relationship between high color rendering index and energy saving

A high color rendering index (CRI) means that the light source can more accurately restore the true color of an object. Energy saving, on the other hand, means reducing energy consumption and lowering costs. The two seem contradictory, but with the advancement of lighting technology, the relationship between the two has changed.

Contradictions in traditional concepts

High CRI means more complex materials and processes: To achieve high CRI, the light source needs to contain more spectral components, which usually requires more complex materials and manufacturing processes, resulting in higher costs.

High CRI may mean higher power consumption: To produce a richer spectrum, the light source may need to consume more energy.

Changes under modern lighting technology

Breakthrough in LED technology: The rapid development of LED technology has made high CRI and high energy efficiency no longer contradictory. Modern LED lamps can achieve high CRI and high light efficiency at the same time by optimizing the spectral composition.

Improvement of phosphors: Optimization of phosphor formula is also an important means to improve CRI. New phosphor formulas can better absorb blue light and emit a rich spectrum, thereby improving CRI without significantly reducing light efficiency.
Summarize

High color rendering index is not contradictory to energy saving, and modern lighting technology has achieved a balance between the two.

When choosing a light source, you need to consider factors such as CRI, energy efficiency, and cost, and make a choice based on actual needs.

As lighting technology continues to develop, light sources with high CRI and high energy efficiency will become more and more popular.

How to save energy while ensuring the color rendering index

Choose an efficient light source

  • LED lamps: LED lamps are one of the most energy-efficient light sources currently available, and high CRI can be achieved by adjusting the combination of chips and phosphors.
  • OLED lamps: OLED lamps have advantages such as wide color gamut and high CRI, but their current cost is relatively high.
  • Fluorescent lamps: Some tri-color fluorescent lamps can achieve higher CRI, but their overall energy efficiency is lower than that of LEDs.

Optimizing lighting design

  • Reasonable layout: Arrange lamps reasonably according to the actual needs of the space to avoid excessive lighting.
  • Control lighting duration: Use sensors or intelligent control systems to automatically adjust lighting brightness and duration based on pedestrian flow and ambient light intensity.
  • Choose the appropriate color temperature: Selecting the appropriate color temperature according to different scenes can not only meet visual needs but also improve work efficiency.
