KingOrnan Lighting Academy Series Article 3: Color temperature

colour temperature gradient

Welcome once again to our Kingornan Lighting Academy. In the last issue, we delved into the concept and use scenarios of lamp miniaturization. In this episode we will talk about “color temperature”.
Color temperature is a very important concept that helps us understand the color of a light source and choose the right light source to meet our needs. Whether it’s home lighting, photography, or displays, color temperature plays an important role.
Let’s delve into the world of color temperature and its different applications~

KingOrnan Lighting Academy Series Article 3: Color temperature

What is colour temperature?

Show the color temperature changes of sunlight from 6 AM to 5 PM every hour.

Definition:

Color temperature is a physical quantity used to describe the color properties of a light source. It represents the absolute temperature at which the light source’s color matches the color emitted by a black body heated to that specific temperature. In simpler terms, color temperature is used to describe the color of light.

Measurement Unit:

Color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K).

Relationship Between Color Temperature and Color:

  • As the color temperature rises, the light color becomes cooler: transitioning from red to yellow, then white, and finally blue.
  • As the color temperature decreases, the light color becomes warmer: the red component of the light increases.

In essence, color temperature is the “temperature” of light. Higher temperatures correspond to bluer light, while lower temperatures correspond to redder light. Commonly referred to color temperatures range from 1800K to 7000K.

Starting Point of Color Temperature:

Absolute Zero:

Absolute zero (-273°C) is the theoretical starting point for color temperature. At absolute zero, objects no longer radiate energy and therefore have no color.

Sunrise:

When the sun first rises, the color temperature is about 1700K, and it appears red. This is the most intuitive starting point for color temperature in our daily lives.

Basic Application of Color Temperature

Reference Standard for Color Temperature Application: Sunlight

Sunlight as a standard for reasons:

  • Nature’s most common light source: Over the course of human evolution, the visual system adapted to changes in sunlight.
  • There is a wide range of color temperatures: from warm tones in the early morning to cool tones at noon, sunlight provides a rich variety of color temperatures.
  • The physiological and psychological effects on humans are significant: different color temperatures of sunlight can affect our biological clock, mood and behavior.

Application Formula:

  • High Illumination + High Color Temperature: Produces a bright and refreshing feeling, suitable for environments requiring concentration, such as offices and study areas.
  • Low Illumination + Low Color Temperature: Creates a warm, relaxed atmosphere, ideal for environments meant for rest and relaxation, like bedrooms and restaurants.

Important Cut-off Point: 4000K

  • Below 4000K: The light color is warm, creating a cozy and comfortable ambiance, often used in home lighting.
  • Above 4000K: The light color is cool, providing a bright and alert feeling, typically used in offices or environments that require mental focus.

Choosing Color Temperature Based on Foot Traffic

  • High Foot Traffic Areas: Use higher color temperatures to provide a clear and bright environment, suitable for places like shopping malls where high alertness and clear visibility are needed.
  • Low Foot Traffic Areas: Use lower color temperatures to create a warm and comfortable atmosphere, ideal for spaces like bedrooms where relaxation is the focus.

Warm vs. Cool Spaces

  • Warm Spaces: Opt for warm color temperatures to enhance the cozy feel of the space. For example, if the main color scheme of a space is red, it is recommended to choose lighting with a color temperature of 3000K.
  • Cool Spaces: Opt for cool color temperatures to complement the space’s cool tones. For example, if the main color scheme is blue, it is recommended to choose lighting with a color temperature of 6500K.

Choosing Color Temperature Based on the Pace of Activity

  • Fast-Paced Spaces (Practical): Use color temperatures above 4000K, suitable for supermarkets and other environments where quick actions and decisions are necessary.
  • Slow-Paced Spaces (Luxurious): Use color temperatures below 4000K, suitable for exclusive clubs, upscale restaurants, and other luxurious, relaxing environments.

Mixed Space Recommendations:

  • When unsure about the appropriate color temperature for a space, consider using 3500K. This is seen as a universal color temperature that provides balance without overwhelming the senses.

Special Applications:

  • Buddhist Shrines: The color temperature of 2200K is used, representing holiness and tranquility.
  • Aquariums: A color temperature of 10000K is preferred, mimicking the blueness of seawater and making aquatic life appear lively and vivid.

Consistency of Color Temperature in Interior Lighting Design

In interior lighting design, managing the consistency of color temperature is crucial due to variations in color between different brands, visibility factors, and lamp wattages. Two key principles to consider are the “single lamp solution” and “control of color difference.”

1. Single Lamp Solution

Advantages:

  • Simple and Beautiful: Utilizing a single lamp in a space enhances visual integrity and harmony.
    Ease of Installation and
  • Maintenance: Fewer lamps simplify installation and maintenance processes.
  • Cost Savings: Reducing the number of lamps can lower both procurement and installation costs.

Application Scenarios:

  • Small spaces with a single function, such as bedrooms, bathrooms, and dining rooms.
  • Areas that do not require high lighting effects and only need to meet basic lighting needs.
Projects with limited budgets that need to control lighting costs.

2. Color Difference Control

Importance:

Chromatic aberration refers to the difference in color output between various light sources. Using multiple lamps with varying color temperatures or color rendering indexes can lead to uneven lighting, color distortion of objects, and impact both visual comfort and aesthetic appeal.

Control Methods:

  • Consistent Lamp Selection: Choosing lamps with the same color temperature and color rendering index is the most direct and effective way to ensure uniform light color.
    Professional Dimming
  • Equipment: Some dimming systems can fine-tune lamps with different color temperatures to harmonize their light output.
  • Strategic Lamp Placement: Arrange lamps with different color temperatures in separate areas to prevent direct comparison and enhance overall lighting harmony.

3. Addressing Color Difference in Magnetic Track Lights and Downlights

The issue of color variation in magnetic track lights and downlights is relatively common. Magnetic track lights, due to their light source structure and installation method, are more susceptible to problems like uneven light color and lower color rendering index. Downlights, with their focused light source and fixed beam angle, typically exhibit smaller color differences.

Suggestions for Reducing Color Difference:

  • Selection of Magnetic Track Lights: Opt for well-known brands (for example, the KingOrnan brand) and check the color temperature and color rendering index before purchase.
  • Installation of Magnetic Track Lights: Ensure proper spacing between fixtures and use accessories like diffusers or grilles to minimize glare and improve light uniformity.
  • Consistency in Downlights: Pay attention to the consistency of color temperature and color rendering index during selection and installation, and arrange the lamps according to the needs of the space.

Following the principles of “single lamp solution” and “color difference control” in interior space lighting design can help achieve a more comfortable, aesthetically pleasing, and energy-efficient lighting environment.
